NSS held Joint Meeting with Religious Leaders in EMU

In order to establish a smooth relationship between the Nigerian Students Society (NSS) EMU, and our religious bodies, the leadership of NSS-EMU held a crucial meeting with the leadership of all religious bodies with Nigerian members (Churches and Mosque), to initiate modalities capable of bridging the gap between the NSS and all religious bodies for the betterment of the entire Nigerian Students in EMU.

The Acting President of the NSS, Comrade Ajiboro Temitope presented the agenda of the meeting by first acknowledging the role played by religious bodies and efforts put by our religious leaders in teaching and guiding students in living just, and also inculcating high moral standards in the society.

The Acting President went further to say, since our administration were elected into office, the leadership of the society has been wanting to initiate such gathering where the leadership of the society and the leadership of various religious bodies will come together to interact in other to allow the society serve her members and more so involve the religious bodies in her activities.

That, though it was not easy to hold this meeting due to tight schedules within the semester, he was glad that finally it was possible and the turnout was very encouraging.


The religious leaders reacted by appreciating the leadership of the NSS for such initiative of calling a meeting to hear the views of religious leaders to further reposition the society in the right direction by introducing more students building programs. The religious leaders further commended the leadership of the NSS and encouraged that this meeting should continue so as to enable the society and religious bodies be on the same page.

Some suggestions raised by the religious leaders were as follows:

1. Sharing religious items like flyers should be allowed in school, so they can reach out to more members

2. Channel the energy of youths towards positive things and visions

3. Mentorship of new students

4. A committee cutting across all churches and mosque should be formed to further unite churches and also bridge the gap between the church and mosque. This committee can propose some programs that will be organized by the NSS 

5. Having programs that will enhance student's morals and visions, rather than just organizing social events.

6. To change the mentality of youths, to enable both Muslims and Christians work together

7. The NSS should pressure the University to equip Guidance and Counselling with skilled workers from various language speaking countries

8. The University should carry out a proper orientation for new students by paying attention to rules and regulations of EMU and TRNC, grading system of the University and other importance issues.

9. The NSS should assist in picking new students from the airport upon arrival, to avoid new students falling into bad hands

10. Since the new students coming to the island are mostly young and crave for freedom, NSS should introduce a new kind of positive freedom to them, other than the negative freedom they adopt

11. Monthly programs should be introduced to bring all Nigerians in EMU together

12. They should be constant exchange of ideas between the NSS and religious bodies

13. The society should send representatives to assist new students in various departments to enable them register smoothly and settle down; the program should be strongly supported and assisted by all religious bodies

14. There should be a balance between social and educational programs organized by the society

15. Problems affecting Nigerian Students should be itemized and tackled more efficiently

After much contributions and deliberations by both the NSS Officials and Religious Leaders, the NSS Acting President concluded by saying; his team will discuss and carry out the implementation process to make sure that a better NSS is achieved, so as to enable the next NSS leadership have cordial relationship with all religious bodies in EMU.

The Acting President announced the proposed date for the Orientation for new students / congress as 8th October, 2016 and informed the religious leaders that they will be fully involved.
